It turns out there's a common sweetener that claims to be a natural, healthier alternative to sugar (we'll get to that in a minute) that can help you solve it, too. WomanEL invites you to eat agave.

What to do urgently for constipation: you need agave

Agave syrup contains a high concentration of fructose. Fructose is a common irritant for people following a low FODMAP diet. FODMAP stands for fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols, the chemical names for five naturally occurring sugars that are not easily absorbed by the body.

For people with digestive disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), there are general dietary guidelines that recommend avoiding foods high in FODMAPs. Agave falls under the category of monosaccharides. “If your body is sensitive to excess fructose, it can cause gut problems,” said registered dietitian Nicky Streely.

If you're thinking about other natural alternatives like honey and corn syrup that won't make you run to the bathroom, think again. Honey and corn syrup also contain high levels of fructose. Therefore, it is better to either limit their consumption or avoid them. Now let's return to the question that may arise in your mind: is agave really better than regular sugar?

But, if all this threatens you, and your problem is constipation, you can try agave.

Agave is traditionally believed to have medicinal properties and is native to Mexico and the Caribbean. Agave has become a popular alternative to simple sugar when it comes to sweeteners. It has a lower glycemic index (10-27) compared to other sweeteners such as honey with a glycemic index of 58, maple syrup with a glycemic index of 54, and table sugar with a glycemic index of 63.

“Derived from a plant, agave also contains trace amounts of minerals including iron, potassium and magnesium.” Kate Zeratsky, a registered dietitian at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, tells the story.

But sweeteners are sweeteners, and consuming too much of them can lead to weight gain and other health problems anyway. According to experts, no-calorie options such as stevia, monk fruit, erythritol and even fresh or frozen fruit are better options.

In fact, agave may not even be a healthier alternative to table sugar due to… for dangerously high fructose levels. People who are watching their diet due to digestive problems, as well as those trying to control their blood glucose levels, should ideally look for alternatives to this natural syrup.

Don't have agave syrup at home? What about olive oil? It also appears to be effective for constipation.
