The Hellenic Orthodox Church has launched LOGOS, an AI-powered spiritual chatbot based on ChatGPT that answers theological questions, reports Baltimore Chronicle.

The Hellenic Orthodox Church has introduced a new “digital spiritual guide” that uses artificial intelligence to provide answers to theological questions. The AI-powered tool, called LOGOS, was developed to assist believers seeking guidance on matters of faith, reports Baltimore Chronicle with reference to Kathimerini.

The project was launched by the Metropolis of Nea Ionia and Philadelphia in partnership with the University of the Aegean, located on the island of Lesbos. LOGOS operates on the ChatGPT platform and was created over eight months under the leadership of Metropolitan Gabriel of Nea Ionia, who conceived the idea. He described the project as an “organized digital library” where artificial intelligence algorithms collect theological information and transform it into clear and meaningful answers.

Metropolitan Gabriel emphasized that the new tool is not meant to replace priests or spiritual advisors. Instead, it aims to serve as a guide for believers seeking to deepen their understanding of faith. “It is a signpost that helps the faithful take the next step within the Church, which is called to teach and nurture,” he explained.

The Metropolitan also highlighted that technology should always serve humanity rather than control it. “The purpose is not to make humans tools of artificial intelligence, but to make artificial intelligence a tool for humans. Every instrument created by people must be used for the benefit of humankind,” he said.

As an example of LOGOS’s functionality, hromadske reported that when asked about confession, the chatbot described it as “a sacrament of repentance, where a person, with sincere remorse, returns to the embrace of God the Father.” The AI tool also cited St. John Chrysostom and St. John Climacus and provided practical advice on how to prepare for confession.
