Veterans Day, celebrated annually on November 11, is a national holiday in the United States honoring all who have served in the armed forces. The tradition began in 1919, when President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as Armistice Day to mark the end of World War I. Decades later, in 1956, Congress officially renamed it Veterans Day to recognize veterans of all U.S. wars, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs. As the nation pauses to honor military service, many Americans wonder what will remain open or closed on this federal holiday, reports Baltimore Chronicle with reference to CBS News.

Most banks across the United States will not operate on November 11, as Veterans Day is recognized as a Federal Reserve holiday. Customers will still be able to use ATMs and digital banking services throughout the day, but in-person transactions will generally not be available until November 12.

Financial markets, however, will continue operating as usual. Both the Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange remain open on Veterans Day, as they do not observe it as an official market holiday. The next scheduled market closure will occur on Thanksgiving Day, November 27. Bond trading, on the other hand, will pause for the day, as announced by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.

Retailers show a mixed pattern of observance. Costco, for example, will remain open under its standard business hours and does not list Veterans Day among its official closures. Most grocery stores and restaurants will also be open, but customers are encouraged to verify hours locally since some chains may have modified schedules. Businesses confirmed to operate on November 11 include Aldi, Dunkin’, Home Depot, IHOP, KFC, Kroger, McDonald’s, Petco, Sonic, Wegmans, and Wendy’s.

Shipping services will mostly function as usual. FedEx and UPS will continue both retail and delivery operations without interruption. The U.S. Postal Service, however, will close all post office branches in observance of the holiday. Only Priority Mail Express services will be available on November 11, while regular mail deliveries and pickups will resume the following day.

In recognition of Veterans Day, numerous restaurants and retailers are also extending special offers and discounts to veterans, active-duty service members, and their families. The American Legion — a national veterans organization with more than 1.6 million members — has published a detailed list of available deals for November 11, covering dining, shopping, and entertainment across the country.
