The Ukrainian team took fifth place in the women's relay at the planetary biathlon championship.
On Saturday, February 17, at the Biathlon World Championships 2024 in Nove Mesto, Czech Republic, the women's relay race took place.
For the Ukrainian team Irina Petrenko, Yulia Jima, Anastasia Merkushina and Kristina Dmitrenko ran in it. Our team finished in fifth place.
At the opening stage, Petrenko performed prone shooting flawlessly and left the shooting range in sixth position. On the stand, Irina used one additional round and became seventh, and passed the baton to tenth, 48 seconds behind the leader, the French team.
At the second stage, Jima shot perfectly prone and pulled the “blue-yellows” to seventh place. On the stand-up, Yulia made one mistake and remained seventh. She passed the baton also seventh, 43 seconds behind the sensational leader – the Estonian team.
At the third stage, Merkushina was forced to use two additional rounds during prone shooting and left the firing line eighth. On the stand, Anastasia missed three times, barely avoiding a penalty loop, and exited the shooting in seventh place. The Ukrainian also passed the baton seventh, behind the leader – France – 1 minute and 30 seconds.
In the final stage, Dmitrenko shot quickly and accurately while prone and lifted Ukraine to sixth position. On the stand in a crazy wind, Christina used three extra rounds to close out the final target. However, this did not stop her from reaching fifth place after the shooting range and maintaining it until the finish. The gap between the “blue-yellows” and the winner was 2 minutes 9 seconds.
France became the world champion in the women’s relay, Sweden won silver, and Germany won bronze.
Note that fifth place is Ukraine’s best result in three years in women’s relay races at the Biathlon World Championships. And also a second top-5 finish this season (after the World Cup in Ruhpolding).
