In the second round, Elina Svitolina will play against German Tatyana Maria.

The first racket of Ukraine Elina Svitolina (No. 20 WTA) defeated her compatriot Angelina Kalinina (No. 32 WTA) in the first round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Dubai.

Ukrainian derby in the UAE it lasted 1 hour 41 minutes. Svitolina won the first set with a score of 6:3, and in the second game she defeated Kalinina in a tiebreak – 7:6.

During the entire match, Svitolina served 7 times, made 2 double faults and used 1/3 break points. Kalinina made 3 straight serves, did not make double faults and did not use any of the 3 break points.

Svitolina and Kalinina competed on the court for the second time in their careers. Both matches ended in Elina's favor.

Note that for Svitolina this is the first tournament after the Australian Open 2024, where she left the match in tears against the Czech in the 1/8 finals Linda Noskova due to a back injury.

Svitolina is the only Ukrainian to make it past the opening round of the tournament in the UAE. Earlier, Lesya Tsurenko and Marta Kostyuk withdrew due to health problems, and Dayana Yastremskaya lost to the “neutral” Russian Veronika Kudermetova.
