“After the fight with Haney, I wanted to end my career”: Lomachenko – about the victory over Kambosos and future plans

The Ukrainian summed up the results of his successful title fight and told what he was going to do next.

The newly crowned IBF lightweight world champion Vasily Lomachenko commented on his bright knockout victoryover Australian George Kambosos.

The Ukrainian admitted that after losing his previous fight to American Devin Haney, he wanted to end his boxing career, but his father motivated him to take on a new challenge – to fight for the championship title again.

“This title is for him (for my father – approx.). Because after the fight with Haney, I wanted to end my boxing career. I thought I had proven everything to myself in boxing, in this sport. And I don’t need to continue.

But my father sent me news every day about me and the best moments of my last fights. And I felt that he wanted to continue. He wants the title again. And he told me: “We have to do this again. We have to fight for the title again.”

And it was a hard decision for me because I was tired. But I love my family, I love and respect my father. He made me in life and boxing. This title and victory are for my father,” said Lomachenko.

Vasily also shared his thoughts about Kambosos’ performance in the ring.

“I expected a little more. Everything he did – we were ready for it. I saw it during the fight, I just had to adapt to it round by round. I felt that I could beat him ahead of schedule.

“I expected a little more. p>

No, that was not the goal for me. But this is a fight for the world title, so you need to finish the fight from a position of strength, which is what I did,” Lomachenko said at a press conference after the fight.

In addition, the Ukrainian spoke about his future plans in boxing .

“I don't want to fight anymore now. I just want to go home to my family. The last six months have been difficult, we prepared carefully. Boxing is always difficult, you have a schedule, diet, hard training. Now I need to rest, and only then talk about the next fight,” Vasily summed up.

Lomachenko knocked out Kambosos in the 11th round and won the vacant IBF world champion belt in lightweight.

For Lomachenko, this was his first fight since May 2023, when he lost by unanimous decision to Haney in the fight for the title of absolute world lightweight champion. Now on the count of 36. -year-old Ukrainian has 18 victories (12 by knockout) and 3 defeats in the professional ring.
