In the second half, the scoreboard remained balanced for a long time, but in the 80th minute Canada took the lead – Jonathan David, who came on as a substitute, scored.
However, Jesse Marsh's team failed to hold on to the victory. In stoppage time, in the 90+2nd minute, the Uruguayans were saved from defeat by 37-year-old Luis Suarez, for whom this goal was his first in the tournament.
According to the tournament regulations, in the event of a draw in regulation time in a playoff match, the teams immediately proceed to a penalty shootout. There, Marcelo Bielsa's team turned out to be more accurate, converting four of their four shots – Federico Valverde, Rodrigo Bentancur, Georgian De Arrascaeta and Luis Suarez were accurate.
Whereas the Canadian players missed twice out of five attempts, Ismael let his team down Kone and Alphonso Davies. Thus, it was Uruguay who won bronze medals at the 2024 America's Cup.
