“I wanted to immediately fight for European Cups”: Myron Markevich named the reason why he left Karpaty

An experienced specialist told why he left the post of coach "green-white" before the start of the new season.

Myron Markevich commented on his decision to resign from the post of head coach of Lviv Karpaty.

The 73-year-old Ukrainian specialist said that he and the “green-white” management had different visions of the team’s ambitions for the next season. Markevich wanted to fight with the “Lions” for getting into the European Cups, for which he considered it necessary to strengthen himself with footballers of the appropriate level, but the club president refused to satisfy his demands.

“It was my decision. Nobody wanted to fire anyone. Everything is simple here. We reached the major league, and I wanted to immediately fight with Karpaty for places in European competition. To solve these problems, we needed appropriate qualified footballers. This was my vision The president of the club thinks that we need to move towards playing on the international stage in a year or two or three. If I were 50 years old, maybe I would agree to such an offer. you are over 70 and you feel that you can do it, you want results.

I’ll be honest, I was fixated on the goal of bringing Karpaty into the European Cup at the end of the next season. And balancing on the brink of fighting for prizes and the relegation zone is not for me, it’s not interesting to me. We had different visions of the team's ambitions for the next season. We still have good relations, there are no complaints against each other. For me, for sure, and for the president, I hope, too.

Lupashko? To be honest, I don’t want to swear, but everyone goes to one place – who came there. I'm telling it like it is. The goal was to take Karpaty to a completely different level. We needed players who could implement the tasks. I have this vision, the president wants to stretch out these ambitious plans over time.

Which football players were invited to the major leagues? Qualified. It makes no sense to mention their names – they are already employed in other clubs. In my opinion, if we take into account the squad with which we reached the major league, then I think it will share 8-12 places in the standings,” Football 24 quotes Markevich.

Markevich also shared his plans for the future.

“For God’s sake! You know my position in life. Tomorrow I’ll play for the Karpaty veterans against the military. I always try to keep myself in shape. In general, my desire is for football to be at a high level in Lviv. For Karpaty to grow to the level European Cups.

I had a very good year. Thanks to the players, coaching staff, base and stadium workers, we solved the main problem – we wanted to return to the Premier League, of course, to take first place in the First League. but, apparently, they relaxed early. That’s my fault, because you can’t lose 8 points of advantage,” said the ex-Lions coach.

Note that on the eve of Karpaty appointed a new head coach. It was the ex-mentor of “Inhulets” Vladislav Lupashko, who only in June headed the youth team of “Lions” (U-19).

Recall that Markevich headed “Karpaty” in June 2023 after a seven-year pause in coaching. Under his leadership, the “lions” took second place in the First League and qualified for entry into the UPL, where they will play for the first time since the 2019/20 season.

It is the “green-whites” who will open new season of the Ukrainian championship – in the first round, the Lviv team will meet Rivne Veres on the road on August 3.
