CAS rejects Russia's appeal to strip figure skater Valieva of 2022 Olympic gold medal due to doping

CAS rejects Russia's appeal to strip figure skater Valieva of 2022 Olympic gold medal due to doping

Earlier, the Russians were stripped of their gold medals in the Olympic team figure skating tournament, and Kamila was disqualified for four years.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne rejected Russia's appeal in the case of deprivation“gold” in the team figure skating tournament at the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing

This was reported on the official website of the organization.

In January 2024, CAS disqualified Russian Kamila Valieva for doping. Her results in the team figure skating tournament (short and free program) at the 2022 Olympics were annulled.

Consequently, the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) team, which is the name under which the aggressor country's team competed at the 2022 Olympics without its own flag or anthem due to sanctions for mass manipulation of athletes' doping samples, was stripped of the “gold” in the team figure skating tournament.

After Valieva's results were annulled (she earned 20 points out of 74 for the team), the ROC team dropped from first to third place and received bronze medals instead of “gold”.

The CAS also reported that they are continuing to consider the appeal of Canada, which took fourth place in the team figure skating tournament at the 2022 Olympics. Now the Canadians are demanding that not only Valieva's result be annulled, but also that of the entire Russian team, and that they be given the bronze medals.

Recall that CAS disqualified Valieva for 4 years – the Russian figure skater will not be able to compete until December 25, 2025. The athlete was stripped of all medals, titles, awards, and prize money won since December 25, 2021, when she tested positive for doping at the Russian Championships. Among other things, Kamilla lost the gold from the 2022 European Championships.
