"This medal is for our defenders: Harlan's first words after winning team gold at the 2024 Olympics

The six-time Olympic medalist shared her emotions after the resounding triumph.

Ukrainian Olga Harlan commented on winning the gold medal in the team tournament in sabre fencing at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Kharlan climbed to the top step of the podium as part of the Ukrainian team, which also included Elena Kravatskaya, Alina Komashchuk and Yulia Bakastova.

The sabre fencers dedicated their Olympic gold to Ukraine and all those who defend our homeland from the Russian occupiers.

“We can't comprehend this. I think we'll comprehend it a little later. We know one thing: we raised the Ukrainian flag higher and sang the anthem. This medal is for our defenders. We are grateful to our families for their support. “We are shocked,” Suspilne Sport quotes Harlan as saying.

The gold in team sabre is Ukraine's first top-class award at the 2024 Olympics and its third medal overall. Earlier, Harlan won bronze in the individual sabre event, and Serhiy Kulish won silver in shooting.

Oleksandr Khizhnyak, who reached the semifinals of the boxing tournament, guaranteed Ukraine another award at the 2024 Olympics, at least a bronze one.

The Games in Paris will last until August 11. Ukraine is represented at the XXXIII Summer Olympics by 140 athletes competing in 23 sports.
