In the final, Kovtun scored 15.500 points. He was only beaten by China's Zou Jinyuan (16.200 points), who took the gold. The bronze medalist was Japan's Shinnosuke Oka (15.300 points).

Another Ukrainian Oleg Verniaiev took eighth place with a score of 13.300 points. During the exercise, he lost his balance on the bars, which deprived him of a chance to compete for a medal.

This is the first Olympic medal in Kovtun's career. At the Games in Paris, he twice became fourth – in floor exercises and in the individual all-around. Ilya also took fifth place as part of the Ukrainian team in the team all-around.

For 20-year-old Kovtun, this is the second Olympics in his career. At his debut Games in Tokyo, he took 11th place in the individual all-around and became seventh on the team.

30-year-old Verniayev is the 2016 Olympic champion in Rio de Janeiro on parallel bars and a silver medalist in the all-around. In October 2020, he was suspended from competition, and in 2021 he was disqualified for four years due to the prohibited drug meldonium found in the body. Because of this, he was forced to miss the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, which took place in the summer of 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic. In March 2023, Oleg's disqualification was halved for doping, which was supposed to last until November 2024, therefore he got the opportunity to compete at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Vernyaev at the Olympics -2024 became eighth in theindividual all-around final. Oleg also took fifth place in the team all-around and finished fifth in pommel horse exercises.

In total, Ukraine has already won seven medals at the Olympic Games 2024: two gold, two silver and three bronze.
