The 79-year-old Romanian specialist will coach his country's national team for the second time.
Former head coach of Shakhtar Donetsk and Dynamo Kyiv Mircea Lucescu has taken charge of the Romania national team.
This was announced by the Romanian Football Federation.
At a special press conference held on August 6 at the office of the Romanian Football Federation, it was announced that Lucescu signed a two-year contract with the national team.
The 79-year-old specialist replaced Edward Iordanescu, who left the national team immediately after Euro 2024, as the coach of the Romanian national team. At the continental championship, the Romanians reached the playoffs, having defeated Ukraine (3:0) in the opening round of the group stage. In the 1/8 finals, Romania was eliminated by the Netherlands (0:3).
Lucescu headed the Romanian national team for the second time in his career. He first coached the Romanian national team at the start of his coaching career – from 1981 to 1986.
Lucescu's previous place of work was Dynamo Kyiv, which he headed from the summer of 2020 to November 2023. Already in his debut season, Mircea won the championship and the Ukrainian Cup with the Kyivians, and also led the team to the group stage of the Champions League.
From 2004 to 2016, Lucescu was the head coach of Shakhtar Donetsk. With the Miners, the Romanian won 22 trophies: eight times he became the winner of the Ukrainian championship, six times the national cup, seven times the Ukrainian Super Cup, and in the 2008/09 season he won the UEFA Cup.
