"Manchester City" beat "Manchester United" in dramatic penalty shootout to win FA Community Shield

"City" won the trophy in the opening match of the English football season.

Manchester City beat Manchester United to win the 2024 English Super Cup.

The regular time of the match at Wembley Stadium in London ended with a score of 1:1, and in the penalty shootout, Josep Guardiola's team was more accurate – 7:6.

The Red Devils were the first to score in this match – in the 82nd minute, Alejandro Garnacho accurately shot into the near corner after a pass from Bruno Fernandes.

However, Guardiola's team found the strength to recoup – in the 89th minute, Bernardo Silva sent the ball into the far corner after a pass from the right flank from Oscar Bobb.

According to the regulations of the match for the FA Community Shield, after a draw in regular time, the teams immediately proceeded to a penalty shootout.

Five shots from the mark were not enough for the opponents to determine the winner. For the Citizens, Bernardo Silva failed to beat Andre Onana with his first shot, while for the Red Devils, Jadon Sancho failed to convert his fourth attempt, losing his duel to Ederson. Moreover, Ederson himself was the fifth City player to take the penalty and did not miss.

The Manchester clubs continued to take 11-meter kicks and only the eighth kicks in this penalty series were decisive. Manchester United's Jonny Evans sent the ball over the bar, which the Sky Blues took advantage of – Manuel Akanji scored with a shot under the crossbar and brought Manchester City the trophy.

Manchester City won the FA Community Shield for the seventh time (1937, 1968, 1972, 2012, 2018, 2019, 2024).

Manchester United remains the record holder for the number of such trophies – the Red Devils have won the FA Community Shield 21 times.

In the new Premier League draw, Guardiola's team, as the reigning champions, will start on August 18 with an away match against Chelsea, owned by Ukrainian winger Mykhailo Mudryk. Erik ten Hag's men will host Fulham on August 16.
