Medal hopes: Ukrainian wrestler reaches 2024 Olympic bronze final

Murazi Mchedlidze won the repechage bout and will fight for the “bronze”.

Ukrainian freestyle wrestler Murazi Mchedlidze reached the “bronze final” at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

On the final day of the Olympics, August 11, the Dnipro native defeated South African Nicolaas de Lange 5-3 in a repechage bout.

Consequently, the 30-year-old Ukrainian won the right to fight for the bronze against Azerbaijani Magomedkhan Magomedov. The bout will take place at approximately 13:35 Kyiv time.

Mchedlidze competes in the 97 kg weight category. At the 2024 Olympics, he defeated Turkey's Ibrahim Ceftci (5:1) in the 1/8 finals, but then lost to reigning European champion Georgian Givi Matcharashvili (0:11) in the quarterfinals.

Thanks to Matcharashvili reaching the final, the Ukrainian got the opportunity to continue the fight for bronze.

Mchedlidze is the last Ukrainian competing at these Olympics. Therefore, it depends on him what the final number of medals won by our athletes at the 2024 Games will be.

As of now, Ukraine has twelve awards from the 2024 Olympics: three gold, five silver and four bronze. The “blue-yellows” occupy 21st place in the medal count.
