Rescue in the minority and penalty shootout: Bayer wins German Super Cup

Short-handed rescue and penalty shootout: Bayer wins German Super Cup

Xabi Alonso's team beat Stuttgart in a tense battle for the trophy.

Bayer won the 2024 German Super Cup. In the match for the first trophy of the new season, the “pharmacists” defeated “Stuttgart”.

The regular time of the match in Leverkusen ended with a score of 2:2, and in the penalty shootout, Xabi Alonso's charges were more accurate – 4:3.

At the start of the match, the teams exchanged goals. Leverkusen were put ahead by Victor Boniface in the 11th minute, but four minutes later the Swabians responded through Enzo Millot.

In the 37th minute, Bayer were left with one man down – the newcomer to the “pharmacists” Martin Terrier received a direct red card.

After the break, Stuttgart took advantage of the numerical advantage and took the lead – Deniz Undav scored in the 63rd minute.

However, the current German champions were able to even the score with one man down – Patrik Schick scored an accurate shot in the 88th minute.

Since the match regulations do not provide for extra time, the match immediately went to a penalty shootout, where Bayer's players were more accurate, converting all four of their shots. But Stuttgart failed to convert two of their five attempts and ultimately lost the fight for the trophy.

Recall that last season Bayer completed the golden double, winning the championship and the German Cup. Stuttgart became the silver medalist of the Bundesliga, thanks to which they received the right to participate in the match for the Super Cup of the country.

In the first round of the new Bundesliga season, Alonso's team will play Borussia Mönchengladbach away on August 23, and Sebastian Hoeness's charges will visit Freiburg a day later.
