 Heart stopped during match: 27-year-old Uruguayan footballer dies in hospital

Juan Izquierdo has died as a result of a heart attack.

Uruguayan club Nacional defender Juan Izquierdo has died after suffering a cardiac arrest during the second leg of the 1/8 finals of the Copa Libertadores against Brazilian Sao Paulo.

The death of the 27-year-old Uruguayan footballer was reported by Nacional press service.

On August 23, Izquierdo suddenly lost consciousness in the center of the field. Players from both teams immediately called for doctors. Juan was immediately taken unconscious to the hospital.

Doctors fought for Izquierdo's life for several days, but were unable to save him.

Juan's club announced that his heart had stopped. The examination also revealed that the player had serious brain damage and increased intracranial pressure.

Izquierdo moved to Nacional in 2024. Before that, he also played for Uruguayan Liverpool, Montevideo, Atletico San Luis, Peñarol and Cerro. In 2022, Juan won the national championship with Nacional.

It should be noted that Izquierdo is survived by his wife, a two-year-old daughter and a baby born a few days before his death.

Earlier it was reported that outstanding football coach Sven-Goran Eriksson died on August 26.
