Ukraine wins 14th gold at 2024 Paralympic Games

Maria Pomazan became a Paralympic champion for the third time in her career.

Ukraine won its fourteenth gold medal at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. Maria Pomazan became the champion in shot put (class F35).

In the final, the 35-year-old Ukrainian won with a personal best of the season – 12.75 meters.

The silver medalist was the Chinese Wang Zhang (11.94 meters), and the bronze was won by the British Anna Nicholson (9.44 meters).

For Pomazan, this is the third gold in her career at the Paralympics. Previously, she triumphed in shot put at the Games in London-2012 and Tokyo-2020.

Maria became a five-time Paralympic medalist. In addition to three gold medals, she has a silver in shot put in Rio 2016 and in discus throw in London 2012.

At the world championship level, Pomazan won gold eight times: six times in shot put (2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2023) and twice in discus throw (2011, 2013).

The Ukrainian team has already won 53 medals at the Paris Paralympics: 14 gold, 18 silver and 21 bronze. Ukraine is seventh in the medal count and fifth in the number of awards won.

The Paralympic Games in Paris will last until September 8. Ukraine is represented by 140 athletes competing in 17 sports. This is a record number of sports in the Paralympic history of Ukraine.

Recall that at the previous Summer Paralympic Games, which took place in 2021 in Tokyo, Ukrainian athletes won 98 awards: 24 gold, 47 silver and 27 bronze. With this result, Ukraine took sixth place in the medal count and became fifth in the number of awards.
