The Ukrainian boxer has already been released by law enforcement.
A possible reason has been named for the detention of WBA, WBO, WBC and IBO heavyweight champion Alexander Usyk at the airport in Krakow, Poland.
Polish promoter Andrzej Vasilevsky, citing the promoter of the Ukrainian boxer Alexander Krasyuk, said, that Usyk traveled by car from Kyiv to Krakow and from there wanted to fly to a training camp in Spain to prepare for a rematch with Briton Tyson Fury, which is scheduled for December 21 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
However, for some unknown reason, airport workers did not want to let Comrade Usik on board and then detained him. In response, Alexander refused to fly on his own and spoke out against the detention of his friend, as a result of which they were both arrested.
“Our airport services did not want to let his friend on the plane for no reason. Sober, with documents. Usyk refused to board the plane and was detained. What a shame! I know Alexander well personally, always top-notch, elegant and respectful of the law,” Vasilevsky added.
The ESPN publication, citing its own source, claims that Vasilevsky's message was about Usyk and his trainer Sergei Lapin, who were allegedly not allowed on the plane at the Krakow airport because an airline employee assessed their condition as “unfit for flight.”
Despite Usyk's attempts to explain that they were fine and were simply tired after a 14-hour trip from Kyiv, they were detained due to the language barrier and the boxer's categorical position.
Lapin has already commented on the incident with the detention. He posted a video in his Instagram story and wrote that the customs officers “exceeded their authority.”
Earlier, Usyk himself commented on the detention at the Krakow airport. He called the situation “a misunderstanding that was quickly resolved.” He also recorded a video message, where he said that he was already free. The boxer did not give any details about what happened.
Let us recall that late in the evening of September 17, Usyk was detained at the Krakow airport. The corresponding video was posted on social networks by the first deputy chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Youth and Sports, Zhan Beleniuk.
The boxer's wife, Ekaterina, commented on her husband's detention with the words “everything is fine, Alexander will explain everything later, nothing criminal.”
