"Merseysiders" conceded at the start of the match, but then proved their superiority over their opponents.

English “Liverpool” beat Italian “Milan” away in the match of the first round of the main stage of the Champions League of the 2024/25 season. The match at the San Siro stadium in Milan ended with a score of 1:3.

The Rossoneri took the lead in the third minute thanks to Christian Pulisic, but Arne Sloth's men turned the game around before the break – Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk scored from corners in the 23rd and 41st minutes respectively.

Paulo Fonseca's team was also saved by the goal frame twice after Mohamed Salah's shots.

Milan's main goalkeeper Mike Maignan was injured at the start of the second half. He was replaced by 19-year-old Lorenzo Torriani, who was making his debut in adult football.

In the 67th minute, the Merseysiders strengthened their lead – Dominik Szoboszlai scored.

The hosts also lost their captain, defender David Calabria, before the end of the match, who was forced to leave the field early due to injury. The score has not changed.

Milan vs. Liverpool match review

In the second round, Liverpool will host Bologna on October 2, and Milan will play Bayer away the day before.

In the updated Champions League format, each team will play eight matches with different opponents in the main round (four at home and four away). All tournament participants received 2 opponents from 4 different baskets.

The eight best teams from the main stage of the Champions League will reach the 1/8 finals. The clubs that take places from 9th to 24th in the overall standings will play paired play-off matches for a place in the 1/8 finals. The rest will finish their performance in European competitions.
