Salvatore Schillaci was battling cancer.

On Wednesday, September 18, former Italian national team forward Salvatore Schillaci passed away at the age of 59.

This was reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport.

In 2022, the Italian was diagnosed with colon cancer. Since then, he has undergone two operations. A week ago, Salvatore was hospitalized in Palermo, and on Wednesday, information about his death appeared.

During his career, Schilacci played for the Italian Messina, Juventus, Inter and the Japanese club Jubilo Iwata.

With Juventus, he won the UEFA Cup and the Italian Cup in the 1989/90 season, and with Inter, he won the UEFA Cup in 1993/94.

The striker played 16 matches for the Italian national team, scoring 7 goals.

With the Azzurri, the striker won bronze at the 1990 World Cup on home soil. At that tournament, Schillaci became the top scorer with 6 goals and was eventually recognized as the best player.
