Roma of Ukrainian forward Artem Dovbyk played a draw at home with Athletic Bilbao in the first match of the round of the main stage of the Europa League season-2024/25. The match at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome ended with a score of 1:1.

The home team took the lead in the 32nd minute – Dovbyk headed in Angelino’s cross from the left flank with a rebound off the turf.

Dovbyk scored in his third match in a row for the Roman club. Before that, he scored goals in Italian championship matches against Genoa and Udinese.

However, Ivan Yuric's team failed to win. The Basques bounced back in the second half – Aitor Paredes' goal saved Athletic from defeat in the 85th minute.

Note that Dovbyk was in the starting lineup for Roma and spent 81 minutes on the field, after which he was replaced by Eldor Shomurodov.

36 clubs are taking part in the main round of the updated Europa League format. Each team will play eight matches with different opponents (four at home and four away). All participants in the tournament received two opponents from four different baskets.

In the second round of the Europa League, Dovbyk's team will play away against Swedish Elfsborg on October 3. On the same day, Athletic will host Dutch AZ Alkmaar.

The eight best teams from the main stage of the Europa League will reach the 1/8 finals. The clubs that take 9th to 24th place in the overall standings will play paired play-off matches for a place in the 1/8 finals. The rest will finish their performance in European competitions.
