The Romans unexpectedly lost to the Swedish “Elfsborg”.
The Italian Roma suffered a sensational defeat away from the Swedish Elfsborg in the match of the second round of the main stage of the Europa League season 2024/25. The match at the local stadium in Borås ended with a score of 1:0.
The Swedish team scored its only goal in the 44th minute – Ghanaian midfielder Michael Baidu converted a penalty.
The Ukrainian forward of the Romans Artem Dovbyk started the match on the bench and came on the field in the 65th minute of the game, replacing Matias Sule.
However, our striker had no scoring chances before the final whistle. Consequently, he was unable to help his team avoid defeat.
We should add that for Croatian coach Ivan Juric, this is the first defeat at the helm of Roma, which he took over in mid-September 2024.

After this fiasco, Roma is in 27th place in the overall standings of the main stage of the Europa League, having only one point to its credit. In the opening round, the Wolves, with a goal from Dovbyk, played a draw with Athletic Bilbao (1:1).
Elfsborg, thanks to a victory with three points, rose to 16th place. In the first round, the Swedish club lost to the Dutch AZ Alkmaar (2:3).
In the third round of the Europa League, the Romans will host Dynamo Kyiv on October 24, and Elfsborg will play away against Turkish Galatasaray the day before.
The eight best teams of the main stage of the Europa League will reach the 1/8 finals. The clubs that take 9th to 24th place in the overall standings will play paired play-off matches for a place in the 1/8 finals. The rest will finish their performance in European competitions.
