Head coach of the Ukrainian national team Serhiy Rebrov explained why he did not include Dynamo midfielder Andriy Yarmolenko in the initial list of players called up for the October matches of the 2024/25 Nations League against Georgia and the Czech Republic.
According to the coach of the “blue-yellows”, he personally spoke about this decision with Yarmolenko himself and explained that he wants to review the candidates for the national team during the Nations League matches.
“Andrey didn't make it to the national team because now, in my opinion, there is a lot of competition among players in the national championship, and we generally look at the League of Nations as a tournament where you can see candidates for the national team.
Yes, I talked to Andrey, I explained. I don't know where the information came from, what I didn't say or explain to Andrey. Personally, I think he is a national team player. I talked to him, I explained my position.
I believe that it is very important for us to give a chance to candidates who show themselves in the national championship,” Rebrov said at a press conference on the eve of the match of the 3rd round of the group stage of the League of Nations with Georgia.
It should be noted that Yarmolenko was later called up.to the camp of the “blue-yellows” instead of the injured Viktor Tsygankov. However, in the end, Andriy also got injured and was replaced in the application of the Ukrainian national team by the midfielder of “Polesie” Oleksandr Nazarenko.
The match Ukraine – Georgia will take place in the Polish city of Poznan at the stadium “Enea Arena”. The starting whistle will sound at 21:45 Kyiv time.
