Petrakov fired as head coach of the Armenian national team

The Ukrainian specialist lost his job after a series of disappointing results at the helm of the Armenian team.

Ukrainian Alexander Petrakov was fired from the post of head coach of the Armenian national team.

This was reported by the press service of the Armenian Football Federation.

On Sunday, October 13, the Armenians, led by Petrakov, lost to North Macedonia (0:2) in a home match of the 4th round of the group round of the 2024/25 Nations League.

After this defeat, the Armenian team's winless streak extended to three matches. Before this, the Armenians tied away with the Faroe Islands (2:2) and lost away to North Macedonia (0:2).

After four rounds, Armenia is in second place in Group 4 of Division C of the Nations League with 4 points, ahead of Latvia on additional indicators. The undisputed leader of the quartet is North Macedonia (10 points). The Faroe Islands are in last place, with 3 points.

In the next fifth round of the Nations League, the Armenians will host the Faroe Islands, and North Macedonia will meet Latvia at home. The matches will take place on November 14.

Petrakov has been in charge of the Armenian national team since January 2023. The 67-year-old Ukrainian specialist has played 18 matches at the helm of the team, in which he won 4 times, drew 4 times and suffered 10 defeats.

During his time with the Armenian national team, Petrakov was noted for his actions that caused indignation among Ukrainian fans. In particular, he called up players from the Russian Championship to the national team and made an ambiguous statement, where he emphasized that sport should exist outside of politics.

Recall that Petrakov headed the Ukrainian national team from August 2021 to January 2023. Before the main team of the “blue-yellows”, he coached the youth teams of our country for 11 years. In particular, in 2019 he became world champion with the Ukrainian U-20 team.
