Serhiy Rebrov's team failed to rise from the last place in its group.
The Ukraine team drew with Georgia in the 5th round of the group stage of the Nations Leagueseason 2024/25. The match at the Batumi Arena stadium in the Georgian city of Batumi ended with a score of 1:1.
The Blue-Yellows opened the scoring in the 7th minute of the match – the home team’s defender Solomon Kvirkvelia cut the ball into his team’s goal after a cross from Mikhail Mudrik from the right flank.
It should be noted that before this, the Ukrainian goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin parried a dangerous long-range shot by Khvicha Kvaratskhelia over the crossbar.
In the 36th minute, Sergei Rebrov's team could have doubled their advantage. Mudrik made a spectacular solo run, but was unable to beat the Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.
In the second half, Villa Sagnol's team was very active in moving forward, trying to recoup. In the 62nd minute, Kvaratskhelia hit the crossbar with a powerful long-range shot.
The Ukrainians immediately responded with a dangerous moment of their own, but Artem Dovbyk shot well over the goal from within the penalty area after a pass from Mudryk from the left flank.
In the 76th minute, Georgia equalized the score. Georges Mikautadze, who came on as a substitute in the second half, finished the ball into an empty net after Trubin saved a header from Giorgi Kochorashvili.
Both teams tried to snatch victory at the end of the match – the Georgians were pressing, but in the 90+3rd minute it was Ukraine that had the best chance to score. Oleksiy Gutsulyak and Oleksandr Nazarenko took turns striking in a quick counterattack in the center of the penalty area, but Mamardashvili saved his team.
Georgia – Ukraine Match Review
After this match, the Ukrainian team (5 points) remained in last place in Group B1. The Georgian team (7 points) moved into first place. In another match of the 5th round of this quartet today at 21:45 Kyiv time, Albania (6 points) will face the Czech Republic (7 points).
In the final round, Rebrov's team will play Albania in Tirana on November 19, while Georgia will play the Czech Republic away.
According to the new format of the League of Nations, a participant in the group tournament in Division B, where the Ukrainian national team competes, if it takes:
- first place – will move up to Division A;
- second place – will play playoffs for promotion to Division A with the team that finishes third in the Division A group;
- third place – will play playoffs for retention of registration in Division B with the team that finishes second in the Division C group;
- fourth place – relegated to Division C.
