 The Ukrainian tennis team defeated Austria and returned to the Billie Jean King Cup elite

The Ukrainian tennis players won the right to play in the qualification of the final tournament of the Billie Jean King Cup-2025.

The Ukrainian women's tennis team won the match meeting against the Austrian team in the playoffs Billie Jean King Cup. Following five matches, the Ukrainians triumphed with a score of 3:2.

On the first day of play, Ukraine and Austria exchanged victories. First, Lesia Tsurenko defeated Tamira Paszek (6:3, 7:5), and then Katarina Zavatska suffered a defeat from Austria's number one racket, Signa Kraus (3:6, 7:5, 5:7).

The second day of the match duel began with a crushing defeat of Tsurenko against Kraus (1:6, 1:6). However, Zavatska came out on the court and defeated Yulia Graber (6:2, 7:5), tying the score in the team confrontation.

So the decisive match was the fifth doubles match, where Nadiya Kichenok and Katarina Zavatska faced the duo of Sinja Kraus/Tamira Paszek. The tense game ended with a strong-willed victory for the Ukrainians with a score of 5:7, 6:2, 6:4.

The victory over Austria allowed the Ukrainian team to return to the elite division of the Billie Jean King Cup. “The Blue-Yellows” received the right to play in the qualifying round for reaching the final part of the tournament in April 2025.

Let us add that in April 2024, Ukraine lost to Romania (2:3) in the Billie Jean King Cup qualification. For our team, this defeat was the third in a row in the qualifying round for reaching the final part. In 2022, Ukrainian tennis players lost to the United States, and in 2023 – to the Czech Republic.

Let us recall that the Ukrainian women's tennis team has played in the final part of the Billie Jean King Cup twice in history: in 2010 and 2012. Then, eight teams entered the world group, which played knockout matches. The Ukrainians were eliminated immediately in the first round.
