The Lisbon team took advantage of the opponent's sending off and finished the match in their favor.

“Benfica" won a comeback victory over “Monaco" in the fifth round match main stage of the Champions Leagueseason 2024/25. The tense match ended with a score of 2:3.

In the 13th minute, the hosts opened the scoring – Elyes Ben Seghir scored. Immediately after the break, the “eagles” recouped thanks to the efforts of Evangelos Pavlidis.

In the 50th minute, the “Monegasques” could have taken the lead again, but Magnes Akliouch's goal was cancelled due to offside. For the same reason, four minutes later, the referee did not count the goal of the Lisbon team, scored by Alexander Ba.

In the 58th minute, Monaco was left with one man down – Wilfried Singo received a second yellow card and was sent off.

However, even with ten men, the representative of the French championship managed to take the lead – in the 67th minute, Sungutu Magassa made an accurate strike.

But Benfica still managed to make a comeback and snatch the victory. In the 84th minute, Arthur Cabral equalized the score, and four minutes later, Zeki Amdouni scored the decisive goal.

It is worth noting that Ukrainian goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin played the entire match for the Portuguese club.

Review of the match “Monaco” – “Benfica”

Thanks to this victory, Benfica (9 points) rose to 14th place in the overall standings of the main round of the Champions League. Monaco with 10 points is in eighth place.

In the next round of the most prestigious European tournament, Benfica will host Bologna, and Monaco will play Arsenal away. Both matches will take place on December 11.

Recall that in the updated Champions League format, 36 clubs will play in a single league, where they will play against eight different opponents (four matches at home and four away).

The eight best teams from the main stage of the Champions League will reach the 1/8 finals. The clubs that take places from 9th to 24th in the overall standings will play paired play-off matches for a place in the 1/8 finals. The rest will finish their performance in European competitions.
