Third Ukrainian tennis player has made it through the opening round of the 2025 Australian Open

Dajana Yastremska reached the second round after Elina Svitolina and Marta Kostyuk.

Ukrainian tennis player Dajana Yastremska (No. 33 WTA) successfully started at the Australian Open-2025.

In the first round match of the main draw, the 24-year-old native of Odessa defeated the representative of Egypt Mayar Sherif (No. 65 WTA). The match lasted 1 hour 13 minutes and ended with a score of 6:1, 6:4.

This was the first face-to-face meeting of the tennis players. During the entire match, the Ukrainian served 5 times, made 2 double faults and converted 3 out of 7 break points.

Dayana's next opponent will be Montenegrin Danka Kovinic (No. 1289 WTA), who beat New Zealander Lulu Sun (No. 44 WTA) in the first round with a score of 6:3, 7:5.

Yastremska is playing in the Australian Open main draw for the sixth time. Last year, she reached the semifinals of the Australian major, where she lost to Chinese Zheng Qinwen. This is her highest achievement in the Grand Slam tournaments.

Earlier, two more Ukrainians, Elina Svitolina and Marta Kostyuk, made it to the second round of the 2025 Australian Open.

In turn, Ukrainian tennis players Yulia Starodubtseva and Daria Snigur failed to overcome the opening round of the Australian Open.

Anhelina Kalinina will be the last of the Ukrainians to play her first round match at the 2025 Australian Open. On Tuesday, January 14, she will face Tunisia's Ons Jabeur.

The main draw matches of the 2025 Australian Open will be held from January 12 to 26. The current champion of the tournament is Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, who is playing in a neutral status due to the full-scale war of Russian occupiers against Ukraine.
