On the night of March 2, a middleweight rating fight (up to 72.6 kg) took place at the Barclays Center in New York – former world champion Jarrett Hurd (25–4–1, 17 KOs, USA) and Johan Gonzalez (36–4, 34 KOs) from Venezuela met in the ring.
The fight went the full distance (10 rounds) and ended with Gonzalez winning by split decision – 98–92, 96–94 and 94–96. After this confrontation, Hurd announced his retirement:
“I'm a man of my word. This will be the last time you see me in the ring. I've had a great career,” Hurd said succinctly.
The American boxer previously held the IBF (2017-19), WBA (2018-19) and IBO (2018-19) middleweight titles. In his last five fights, he suffered three losses, won once, and another fight ended in a draw.
The main event of the boxing show in New York was the lightweight title fight (up to 61.2 kg). WBA belt holder Gervonta Davis failed to defeat his compatriot Lamont Roach.
