On the night of March 2, a fight for the world champion title in the lightweight division (up to 61.2 kg) took place – the WBA belt holder Gervonta Davis (30–0, 28 KOs) from the USA met his compatriot Lamont Roach (25–1–1, 10 KOs). The boxing evening took place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn (New York, USA).
The fight ended in a draw, but many boxing fans believe that the challenger was robbed. In one of the episodes, Davis took a knee, and the referee began to count a knockdown, but quickly changed his mind. This was the point that Lamont lacked for the victory.
The New York State Athletic Commission said in a statement that technical issues during the round made it impossible to review the disputed situation, so the referee's decision not to award a knockdown stood:
“During the round in question, after the commission requested a video replay, a technical issue arose that prevented it from being received in the allotted viewing time. Therefore, the referee's decision in the ring was made and the fight continued,” the statement reads.
“If you take a knee and the referee starts counting, it's got to be a knockdown. If it's a knockdown, I win,” Roach said after the controversial fight.
