Former Formula 1 team owner Eddie Jordan believes that Mercedes should have invited Carlos Sainz, not Andrea Kimi Antonelli, if the team is to win the Constructors' Championship. At the same time, Jordan admitted that the bet on the young Italian debutant could pay off.
Eddie Jordan: “Mercedes will probably save 50 million on Lewis Hamilton's salary. Even if they were to pay Antonelli several million, the savings would be colossal. But in any case, we'll see what Kimi can do. His invitation was a surprise to me.
I still think Mercedes should have signed Carlos Sainz. If they are desperate to win the Constructors' Championship, they need someone other than Kimi to partner George Russell.
“With all due respect, you can't do much in your first season. But if he does, I'll be the first to admit he's done a brilliant job. I might have to eat that because he's a fantastic driver, but at the moment it's all in question. And Mercedes don't know what to expect from him either.”
