25-year-old footballer dies saving people during nightclub fire

North Macedonian Shkupi footballer Andrej Lazarov died as a result of a fire that occurred during a concert in a nightclub.

The team for which Lazarov played reported this on social media.

During a concert by the hip-hop duo DNK in a nightclub in the city of Kochany, which was attended by about 1.5 thousand people, a fire broke out. The cause of the fire was pyrotechnics on the stage – sparks hit the ceiling, which was made of flammable material.

Due to the large number of people and the compact building, chaos and crushing ensued. As a result, more than 150 people were injured – 59 of whom, according to official data, died, and about 100 were injured.

Lazarov tried to save people during the fire. The 25-year-old footballer managed to rescue several people from the flames, but he himself suffocated from carbon monoxide and suffered fatal burns.

Football club “Shkupi” expressed condolences to the family and friends of the deceased player.

“This is a huge loss for our club, our teammates and the entire football community. There are not enough words to describe the pain we are feeling right now. This is one of the biggest tragedies in the history of the club,” the statement said.

It was previously reported that the Champions League winner with Real Madrid had died at the age of 48.
