Ukrainian boxer - the knockout artist was suddenly deprived of the championship fight: what happened

Sergey Bogachuk has received a new opponent and will fight for the interim WBC title, and not a full one.

The fight for the vacant WBC world champion belt in junior middleweight between Ukrainian Sergey Bogachuk and American Sebastian Fundora fell apart.

This is reported by BoxingScene. p>

The reason for the cancellation of Bogachuk’s championship fight was the injury of Keith Thurman, who was scheduled to enter the ring against WBO junior middleweight champion Timofey Tszyu on March 30 in the main boxing match in Las Vegas (USA).

In turn, Bogachuk was supposed to fight Fundora for the WBC junior middleweight title on the undercard of the Thurman-Tszyu fight. However, Thurman's injury changed these plans and “stole” the Ukrainian's chance to become a world champion.

It was announced that Fundora would replace Thurman in the fight against Tszyu, and at stake in this fight would be not only the WBO title, but and the WBC belt, for which Bogachuk was supposed to fight.

At the same time, the President of the World Boxing Council (WBC) Mauricio Suleiman announced that Bogachuk would still hold his fight on March 30, but his opponent would be the American Brian Mendoza. At stake will be the interim WBC junior middleweight title, not the full one.

Recall that in his last fight in July 2023, Bogachuk knocked out Ghanaian Patrick Aloti in the first round.

The 28-year-old Ukrainian’s track record includes 23 wins (23 by knockout) and the only professional defeat that Sergey suffered in 2021 from the American Brandon Adams.
