The largest airport in Northern Europe, Copenhagen’s Kastrup, was forced to halt all flights for several hours on Monday evening after unidentified drones appeared in the vicinity of the airfield, reports Baltimore Chronicle citing the BBC.
Authorities stated on Tuesday morning that the drones were likely operated by a “competent operator” aiming to demonstrate specific skills. However, no suspects have yet been identified.
According to the head of the Danish police, the drones approached from several directions, intermittently switched their lights on and off, and then disappeared after a few hours.
Airspace over the airport was closed at around 8:30 p.m. local time. Copenhagen police confirmed that at least two to three large drones were observed in the area.
Airport spokeswoman Lise Agerli Kurstein said that due to the incident no aircraft could take off or land. About 15 flights had to be redirected to other airports.
