Chinese tech company Xiaomi has unveiled its new Xiaomi 17 smartphone lineup, including the 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max models, showcasing specifications and designs that invite comparisons to the iPhone, reports Baltimore Chronicle. The standout feature of the Pro models is the secondary display on the back, which can be used for selfies, music controls, and interactive widgets.
The naming of the new devices is designed to keep pace with Apple’s numbering, jumping directly from the 15T series to 17. During the Beijing launch event, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun repeatedly referenced Apple’s iPhones, highlighting advantages in battery life, performance, and photography.
The Xiaomi 17 Pro features a 6.3-inch display and weighs 192 grams, while the Pro Max has a larger 6.9-inch screen and weighs 231 grams. Xiaomi emphasized that the Pro Max is thinner and lighter than the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Both models are powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset and come with large batteries — 6,300mAh for the Pro and 7,500mAh for the Pro Max — supporting 100W wired and 50W wireless charging.
Camera capabilities remain a priority. Both Pro models feature triple 50MP rear cameras. The main lens has an f/1.67 aperture, the ultra-wide lens f/2.4, and the Pro Max’s telephoto uses a larger sensor with a faster f/2.6 aperture for improved low-light performance.
The standard Xiaomi 17 has a 6.3-inch display, similar 50MP triple camera setup, and the same Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor but lacks the rear secondary display. Its battery is 7,000mAh, which Xiaomi demonstrated surpasses the iPhone 17’s endurance even when paired with a 5,000mAh MagSafe battery.
All three Xiaomi 17 models are now available for preorder in China, with an official release scheduled for September 27. Pricing is as follows: Xiaomi 17 — ¥4,499 (around $630), 17 Pro — ¥4,999 (around $700), and 17 Pro Max — ¥5,999 (around $840). Global release plans have not been announced, but a European launch is likely in the spring during MWC in February, potentially featuring an even more powerful Xiaomi 17 Ultra.
