Spotify introduces Prompted Playlists, letting users control the algorithm and curate playlists using their own prompts, launching December 11, 2025.

Starting December 11, 2025, Spotify is allowing users to directly influence the platform’s music recommendations through a new feature, Prompted Playlists, giving listeners greater control over their listening experience, reports Baltimore Chronicle with reference to Spotify’s official announcement.

Gustav Söderström, Co-President, CPO, and CTO of Spotify, explained that the feature represents a new era of personalization. With over 713 million active users, 90% of whom consider Spotify essential to their daily routines, the company aims to expand both user engagement and artist growth by empowering listeners to actively shape their playlists.

Prompted Playlists allow Premium users in New Zealand early beta access to describe exactly what they want to hear and define the rules for their personalized playlists. The feature leverages a listener’s entire history on Spotify, reflecting both current preferences and the evolution of musical taste over time. The platform curates and updates each playlist automatically based on listening patterns and world knowledge.

Users can request highly specific playlists, such as “music from my top artists from the last five years including deep cuts I haven’t heard yet,” or “high-energy pop and hip-hop for a 30-minute 5K run, followed by relaxing songs for cool-down, including music from this year’s biggest films and TV shows matching my taste.” Playlists can be fine-tuned by editing prompts, refreshed daily or weekly, and accompanied by context and stories for each song, making the listening experience highly personalized.

The beta also offers a selection of prompts curated by Spotify’s music editors and culture experts. This allows users to explore playlists tailored to their taste while the platform gathers feedback to improve the feature for a wider audience over time.

According to Spotify, Prompted Playlists merge the creativity of human curation with algorithmic convenience, enabling listeners to bring their own ideas to life using simple English prompts. The feature also benefits artists by enabling smarter discovery and connecting music with the most relevant listeners, helping to expand fan bases.

Spotify emphasizes that this development is part of a broader strategy to enhance personalization, intelligence, and cultural awareness on the platform. The company expects 2026 to mark a new chapter for both listeners and artists, providing tools for deeper engagement and more meaningful music experiences.
