We will not talk about the reasons why such a need may arise, but the situation is quite real: sometimes relatives want to register a car to a small citizen. How to do this?

As in other cases of registration of transactions concerning vehicles, registration of a car for a child is carried out at the Service Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. But before paying a visit there, it is advisable to study some of the subtleties of this issue.
At what age can a child own a car
From the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No. 1388 of 7.09.1998 (paragraph 23), it is clear that a car can be registered to a citizen who has reached the age of 14. But if a child inherits a car, he or she can be younger.
One of the fundamental conditions for registering a car for a child is the presence of written consent from the child’s parents or guardians – and it must be certified by a notary.
This is an important point, because not all parents understand that along with the child receiving a car as property, he also receives some risks. Which, of course, the child himself, due to his inexperience in such matters, cannot understand.
Where to start registering a car for a child
There are two ways to register a car for a minor: the car must first be either gifted to him or sold. The corresponding agreement, on gift or sale, is drawn up at the service center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs directly when registering (re-registering) the car for the child as the new owner.
The second way is to first legally register the ownership of the child with a notary, and then also register the car in his name at the Service Center. However, the second way seems more cumbersome and expensive to us, it will take more time and money than registering all the services during one visit to the SC of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
What is needed to register a car for a child
To register a car for a small citizen, you need to visit the nearest Service Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs with the following set of documents:
- Passport of a minor citizen (if any);
- Passports of the child's parents (official guardians);
- Identification codes of the child and parents (guardians);
- Vehicle registration document (if the car is new, then the relevant documents from the car dealership);
- Notarized consent of parents to register a car for their child.
The process of registering a car for a minor citizen is no different from registering a car for an adult. However, the Service Center will enter information about the parents (guardians) into the vehicle registration documents. The papers will also contain a note stating that re-registration of this car for the purpose of alienation is prohibited. And deregistration is also not permitted without the permission of the parents and the permission of the state guardianship and trusteeship authority.
The specified restrictions on the disposal of movable property will be automatically lifted when the owner turns 18 years old.
Short
Probably, even when registering a car for your descendant, you will need to draw his attention to the fact that legal ownership of a car does not mean the ability to drive it until he turns 18 and receives a driver's license. After all, among other things, the parents will have to answer before the law for transferring control of the car to a person without a license.
