MAN has started production of its last turbodiesel for trucks. The new, highly efficient D30 engine family has been launched in Nuremberg. MAN calls the 13-litre diesel the last of its kind: after more than 100 years, the truck manufacturer is planning to switch to electric traction.
RBC-Ukraine reports this with reference to the company’s press service.
At the same time, workshops for the production of batteries are being prepared at the plant in Germany. However, no timeframe for the abandonment of diesel engines has been announced.
MAN CEO Alexander Vlaskamp said that by 2030, every second car of the brand should be electric. However, efficient combustion engines will be needed for a long time, so Nuremberg is investing in both technologies. For example, 250 million euros were invested in the production of MAN D30 diesel engines. The car manufacturer promises “new standards in terms of fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.”
The D30 diesel engines will replace the D26 and D15 series. Six performance levels are available, from 380 horsepower and 2,100 Nm of torque to 560 horsepower and 2,800 Nm. According to MAN estimates, the 40-ton TGX trucks with the new diesel engine are five percent more economical than their predecessors and emit five percent less carbon dioxide.
The D30 diesel engines are planned to be assembled in three shifts. The plant's capacity allows for the production of about 50 thousand engines annually. There are no plans for the next generation of diesel engines, but the MAN press service does not indicate even approximately the life cycle of engines on “heavy” fuel. Probably, in the medium term, diesel engines on special equipment will not go anywhere.
