Mercedes-Benz has become the first German carmaker to receive approval for the use of turquoise parking lights on autonomous vehicles. The approval was granted for testing purposes and will be valid until July 2028.
This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to the press service of Mercedes-Benz.
The turquoise lights will be used to inform other road users when the car is operating in autonomous driving mode. According to the company, this will also allow traffic authorities and police to more easily recognize the system's status and determine whether the driver is allowed to perform other actions during conditionally automated driving.
In the Mercedes-Benz EQS prototype, it is noticeable that turquoise lights are integrated into the front and rear lights as well as the side mirrors. They are permanently illuminated when Drive Pilot is activated. Interestingly, turquoise has already been included in various standards and draft regulations around the world for this purpose.
Mercedes-Benz said turquoise is the ideal color because it “can be clearly distinguished from existing vehicle lighting and traffic lights.” The German engineers' opinion is supported by studies that have shown that turquoise is better than other “free” colors in both physiological and psychological factors.
