On Monday, May 26, the Netherlands will send the final F-16 fighter jet to Ukraine, marking the completion of the delivery of all 24 jets promised since October 2024. Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans confirmed that all aircraft will soon be stationed in Ukraine, reports the Baltimore Chronicle, citing WNL.
The transfer became possible after the Netherlands officially retired its fleet of F-16s, replacing them with F-35 aircraft. In September 2024, a farewell ceremony was held for the F-16s, during which eight jets conducted a symbolic flight over Dutch cities. The Netherlands first received the F-16 in 1979, and over 45 years of service, these aircraft participated in numerous missions.
In addition to the jets themselves, the Netherlands is supplying spare parts, maintenance equipment, and weapons. Specifically, €150 million was allocated for purchasing armaments for the F-16s, along with an additional €300 million for ammunition.
Ukrainian pilots are currently training on the F-16s at a dedicated center in Romania, established with Dutch support. Defense Minister Kajsa Ollongren noted that some of the jets are used specifically for training purposes, highlighting the importance of continuous pilot preparation.
The F-16 transfer is part of broader Dutch support for Ukraine, which includes funding for drone development and the provision of air defense systems. Minister Brekelmans emphasized the importance of maintaining pressure on Russia and continuing support for Ukraine’s defense of its sovereignty.
Earlier we wrote that the Netherlands will contribute 65 million euros to the Ukrainian Energy Support Fund.
