A federal grand jury in the United States has formally indicted a North Carolina man in connection with the death of 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska. The charges against him include an offense eligible for the death penalty, reports Baltimore Chronicle citing NBC News.

In the U.S. District Court for the Western District of North Carolina, 34-year-old Decarlos Brown Jr. was charged with committing a violent act against “a railroad carrier and public transportation system resulting in death.” According to the federal indictment, the jury concluded that Brown intentionally killed Iryna Zarutska. Under federal law, this charge makes him eligible for capital punishment if found guilty.

The attorney representing Zarutska’s family said they were “satisfied with the indictment and hope for swift justice for Iryna.” Meanwhile, Brown’s defense team declined to provide any statements, saying: “We have no comment at this time.”
