Dick Cheney, influential U.S. Vice President, dies at 84. Memorial held at Washington National Cathedral with high-profile political figures attending.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney passed away on November 3 at the age of 84 due to complications from pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease, reports Baltimore Chronicle links to abcnews. Cheney, who served as vice president under George W. Bush and held multiple roles in Washington over four decades, was remembered by political leaders, family, and colleagues during a memorial service at the National Cathedral on November 20, 2025.

Former President George W. Bush, who selected Cheney as his running mate for two terms, delivered a eulogy, recalling the moment he first considered him for the position. Bush emphasized Cheney’s careful analysis and integrity, noting that even when offered the chance to resign in 2004, Cheney remained committed to his duties. Bush concluded that history should record he had chosen his vice president not once, but twice.

Cheney’s daughter, former Representative Liz Cheney, spoke about her father’s dedication to public service and his belief that loyalty to the nation transcended party politics. Bush was visibly emotional as Liz Cheney shared anecdotes reflecting Cheney’s lifelong commitment to the country. Other speakers included Cheney’s longtime cardiologist Jonathan Reiner and Pete Williams, who recounted Cheney’s support during challenging moments in his career, including protecting Williams in 1991 when his sexual orientation became public.

Among the attendees were President Joe Biden, First Lady Jill Biden, former Vice Presidents Kamala Harris, Mike Pence, Al Gore, and Dan Quayle. Notably, former President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance were not invited. Other figures present included Democratic Rep. Nancy Pelosi, Republican Senators Lindsey Graham and Mitch McConnell, Bill Kristol, Hugh Hewitt, and former national security adviser John Bolton.

Cheney’s career included service as a congressman, Secretary of Defense, and Vice President. He played a leading role in the U.S. response to the September 11, 2001 attacks, the war on terror, and the invasion of Iraq. His family described him as a man who taught courage, honor, and love for the country, leaving a legacy of public service and dedication.

Washington National Cathedral, the venue for the memorial, has hosted several state funerals for U.S. presidents, including Jimmy Carter, Dwight Eisenhower, Ronald Reagan, Gerald Ford, and George H. W. Bush. Flags were lowered at the White House following Cheney’s death, though no major proclamation was issued. Cheney’s opposition to Donald Trump, including endorsing Kamala Harris in 2024, was noted, reflecting his ongoing influence in political discourse.
