A severe winter storm sweeping across Colorado and the Midwest caused widespread travel disruptions over the post-Thanksgiving holiday weekend, grounding hundreds of flights and triggering multiple major vehicle accidents, Baltimore Chronicle reports with a link to FlightAware. The most significant impact was felt in Chicago, while travelers across the region faced icy roads, low visibility, and extensive delays.
On Saturday, more than 1,400 flights nationwide were canceled, with the majority concentrated in the upper Midwest due to adverse weather conditions. Among the most alarming incidents, a Delta Connection flight carrying 54 passengers and four crew members skidded off an icy runway at Des Moines International Airport overnight. The aircraft, a Bombardier CRJ-900 operated by Endeavor Air, departed the paved taxiway while landing from Detroit around 9:30 p.m. local time on November 29, 2025. No injuries were reported, and all passengers were safely evacuated and transported to the terminal by bus, according to Delta Air Lines. The National Transportation Safety Board is now investigating the incident, as confirmed by airport communications manager Sarah Hoodjer.
Chicago O’Hare International Airport recorded the highest weather-related disruption, with over 930 flight cancellations and 750 delays by Saturday afternoon. Departures were delayed on average five hours due to snow and ice accumulation, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Chicago Midway International Airport also experienced severe disruptions, reporting 187 cancellations and 85 delays, alongside temporary ground stops at both facilities.
Road travel was similarly impacted. In Putnamville, Indiana, a chain-reaction crash on Interstate 70 involved 45 vehicles, temporarily shutting down the highway. Fortunately, no major injuries were reported. In Colorado, authorities responded to two separate multi-vehicle pileups on Interstate 70 on Sunday morning. The first, east of Glenwood Springs in Garfield County, involved more than 20 vehicles, while the second, in Eagle County west of Gypsum, involved roughly 30 vehicles. Officials noted that icy roads and low visibility were contributing factors.
Winter weather alerts remain in effect across large parts of the Northern U.S., with over half a foot of snow expected from central Iowa to southern Wisconsin, northern Illinois, Indiana, and western Michigan. Strong gusty winds and whiteout conditions are predicted to create highly hazardous travel conditions through Sunday morning. Following the storm, a significant cold front is expected to bring temperatures 10 to 20 degrees below normal for early December, and another winter storm is forecasted for next week.
