A significant winter storm is forecast to impact the upper Midwest on Thursday, moving into the lower Northeast on Friday and tapering off by Saturday morning, reports Baltimore Chronicle. Forecasters expect snow, ice, and freezing rain to affect travel and daily activities across multiple states, with the storm’s effects being particularly pronounced in central and western Pennsylvania, northern Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan.
Freezing rain is anticipated in northern Minneapolis and Wisconsin Thursday evening, progressing into Michigan on Friday morning and reaching western and central Pennsylvania later in the day. Central Pennsylvania cities such as Johnstown and Clarion could experience ice accumulations exceeding a quarter of an inch, creating hazardous driving conditions along major routes including I-80 and I-70. Power outages are also possible due to ice buildup.
Snow flurries may begin as early as noon Thursday in New York City, with heavier snowfall expected after 4 p.m. Snow is forecast to continue Thursday night across New York State, New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts, although Boston is likely to see minimal accumulation. The heaviest snow in the Northeast is predicted for New York City, northern New Jersey, the southern Hudson Valley, and western Pennsylvania, with total accumulation reaching over six inches in some areas, and localized amounts up to eight or nine inches.
Ice accumulation of up to 0.2 inches is expected in northeastern West Virginia, central and northwestern Pennsylvania, and much of Michigan, including Detroit, creating difficult driving conditions on untreated roads. Washington, D.C., and Baltimore may also experience some ice accumulation Friday into Friday night.
In the upper Midwest, northern Minnesota through northern Wisconsin and Michigan could see ice accumulations approaching 0.2 inches. Most snowfall is expected to end by 4 a.m. Sunday, with complete clearing by Saturday morning between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. Residents are urged to exercise caution while traveling and to prepare for potential power interruptions.
