Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto has voiced criticism of the North Atlantic Alliance, questioning the viability of its continued existence in its current structure. In his view, NATO is losing its relevance in today’s geopolitical context, reports Baltimore Chronicle with reference to Sky tg24.

The head of Italy’s defense department emphasized that the Atlantic Ocean was once considered the center of the world, and the primary powers were the United States and Europe. However, Crosetto noted that the global balance has significantly shifted, and it is now essential to establish relations with other regions that increasingly shape international dynamics.

Crosetto stated that NATO’s future might lie in assuming a new mission—one centered on ensuring peace through diplomacy, particularly by engaging in dialogue with countries in the Global South. According to him, if this transformation occurs, the Alliance would become a completely different kind of organization.

“Otherwise, we will not be able to achieve the goal of providing security based on rules that apply to everyone,” the minister added.
