On August 24, Ukraine celebrates its main state holiday — Independence Day. On this day in 1991, the Verkhovna Rada adopted the Act of Proclamation of Ukraine’s independence, reports Baltimore Chronicle.
In 2025, Independence Day falls on a Sunday, which is a public holiday. However, due to the ongoing martial law, the following day off will be canceled. As in previous years, Independence Day will be marked by various events, but due to the war with Russia and the restrictions imposed by martial law, the celebrations this year will be significantly limited.
In Kyiv, a series of free tours are organized to celebrate the holiday, running from August 21 to 24. During these tours, visitors will learn about significant historical events, prominent figures, and places that are important to Ukraine’s independence.
Also, on August 24, a charity event titled “Run in Embroidered Shirts 2025” will be held at the “Urban Park” on the VDNH grounds. The event aims to raise funds for children with autism and developmental delays from the Mostiщensky Special School. Registration for the run is available until August 22 via the provided link.
Furthermore, on August 23, the National Museum of Folk Architecture and Life of Ukraine will host the “Truth’s Strength” festival-market. Visitors will enjoy workshops, handcrafted goods, Ukrainian delicacies, and a large concert program, with funds raised to assist with the prosthetics for military personnel.
The city’s museums and other cultural institutions will also organize themed exhibitions, lectures, and concerts dedicated to the celebration of Ukraine’s Independence Day.
