On the night of September 7–8, 2025, a rare astronomical event will be visible over Ukraine — a total lunar eclipse, commonly known as the Blood Moon. During this phenomenon, the Moon will acquire a deep red-orange hue, appearing as a bright “fiery sphere” above the horizon, reports Baltimore Chronicle.
This year’s eclipse is remarkable for its duration: the total phase will last 82 minutes, making it the longest since 2022. Residents of most countries will be able to witness the phenomenon, but conditions for viewing in Ukraine are expected to be among the best.
A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth is positioned between the Sun and the Moon, fully blocking direct sunlight. However, the Moon does not disappear from the sky — its surface turns shades of red. This happens due to the Earth’s atmosphere: short-wavelength blue light is scattered, while long-wavelength red light reaches the Moon. The shade of the Blood Moon can vary from bright orange to dark red, depending on atmospheric clarity and the presence of dust storms or volcanic ash.
According to astronomers, in Kyiv the eclipse will follow this schedule: the total phase begins at 20:30, the Moon will shine at its reddest at 21:11, the total phase ends at 21:52, and the penumbral phase concludes at 23:55. By then, the Moon will be high enough above the horizon to be easily visible even in large cities. The best viewing conditions will be outside urban areas, away from lights and light pollution.
This eclipse will be a global phenomenon: it will be visible in Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. In North America, only partial viewing will be possible early at night, as the total phase occurs before moonrise. In Ukraine, the Blood Moon will be visible in its entirety from beginning to end.
No special equipment is required to observe the eclipse. An open area with a view of the eastern and southeastern horizon is sufficient. Using binoculars or a small telescope will allow observers to see the Moon’s surface details. Experts recommend choosing a dark location, checking the weather forecast, dressing warmly, and preparing a camera for long-exposure shots.
Astrologers note that such events may influence emotional states and intensify personal reflections, but they pose no danger to humans. Scientists emphasize that the Blood Moon is a unique opportunity to witness the beauty and vastness of the Universe.
