Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom announced recognition of the State of Palestine within minutes of each other, and later on Sunday, Portugal joined them, reports Baltimore Chronicle with reference to the BBC. In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated: “This will not happen. No Palestinian state will be established west of the Jordan River.”
Earlier, several Western countries — France, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Belgium, and Portugal — had announced their intention to recognize the State of Palestine before the opening of the annual United Nations General Assembly session on Monday.
In a video address, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said: “Today, to restore hope for peace for Palestinians and Israelis and to achieve a two-state solution, the United Kingdom officially recognizes the State of Palestine.”
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated on his X account: “Canada recognizes the State of Palestine and offers its partnership in building a peaceful future for both the State of Palestine and the State of Israel.”
