Drones in Spain over Mallorca: Palma de Mallorca Airport halted operations for 35 minutes, flights redirected, incident details reported by Baltimore Chronicle.

On Sunday, operations at Palma de Mallorca Airport were temporarily halted for approximately 35 minutes due to the appearance of an unknown drone in the airport’s airspace, reports Baltimore Chronicle with reference to Dario de Mallorca. At least six flight crews reported seeing the drone near the airport, also known as Son San Juan Airport. As a result, several flights had to be redirected to other airports, and the air navigation service Enaire confirmed that operations were temporarily suspended for safety reasons.

Eight flights were forced to change their routes, with some aircraft diverted to Ibiza, Menorca, and Barcelona. Security forces quickly arrived at the scene and conducted checks using their own drone, but nothing suspicious was found. The incident occurred on a day of very high air traffic: 892 takeoffs and landings were scheduled at Palma de Mallorca Airport that day.

Palma de Mallorca Airport is located 8 kilometers east of the city of Palma and is Spain’s third-largest airport after Madrid and Barcelona. There is currently no information on the exact time the airport will fully resume operations. Local authorities have urged airlines and passengers to maintain heightened safety measures and monitor the situation regarding drones in Mallorca’s airspace.
