French authorities have initiated a court case against three inmates from the Parisian prison La Santé, who threatened former French President Nicolas Sarkozy. The proceedings began after two suspects were brought to court on October 24, reports Baltimore Chronicle with reference to BFMTV and TF1.

According to the prosecutor’s office, one of the inmates repeatedly threatened Sarkozy, stating that the former head of state “would have a hard time in prison.” He has been formally charged with repeated death threats. If convicted, he faces up to three years in prison and a fine of 45,000 euros.

The second inmate is accused of providing his mobile phone, which contained recordings of threats. His actions are considered complicity in a criminal offense, punishable by up to five years in prison.

After the investigation began, both men were transferred from La Santé prison to detention centers in the Val-d’Oise and Essonne departments. The next court hearing in the case is scheduled for December 19.

In addition, a third man is involved in the case. He is suspected of complicity and illegally possessing a mobile phone while in prison. Under French law, this offense carries a sentence of up to three years in prison and a fine of 270,000 euros.
